When to Replace Your Mammography Compression Paddles

MammoService Engineering·February 25, 2026·4 min read

Compression paddles are among the most frequently replaced components on a mammography system. They're in direct contact with patients during every exam, subject to repeated mechanical stress, and critical to image quality. Knowing when to replace them — and with what — can save you money and prevent image quality issues.

Signs a Paddle Needs Replacement

Watch for these indicators: visible cracks, chips, or crazing in the acrylic; yellowing or discoloration that could affect image quality; warping or deformation of the paddle surface; rough edges that could cause patient discomfort; paddle not sitting flush in the compression device; and unusual compression force readings during QA testing.

Understanding Your Paddle Options

Hologic offers several paddle types for Dimensions and 3Dimensions systems. The standard flat paddles come in large 24x29cm and small 18x24cm sizes. The SmartCurve paddles, available for both SDM and 3DM systems, feature a curved design intended to improve patient comfort during compression.

Key part numbers include: ASY-13532 (Small Breast Contour Paddle), ASY-11738 (18x24 Smart Curve Paddle), and ASY-11739 (24x29 Smart Curve Paddle). For diagnostic work, the 10 CM Spot Paddle (ASY-01985) and 10 CM Mag Paddle (ASY-02164) are also common replacement items. Make sure you're ordering the correct paddle for your system configuration.

Aftermarket vs. Genuine

We strongly recommend using only genuine Hologic paddles. Aftermarket compression paddles may not meet the precise dimensional and material specifications required for consistent image quality. The acrylic formulation, thickness, and surface finish all affect X-ray transmission and image appearance. A few dollars saved on an aftermarket paddle isn't worth the risk of image quality degradation.

Paddle Maintenance Between Replacements

To maximize paddle life: clean paddles according to Hologic's recommended cleaning procedure after each use; inspect paddles visually during daily QA; store paddles properly when not in use; and handle paddles carefully to avoid drops or impacts.
